Branell Homestead May Wedding | Lucy + Luke

Love these two. Love everything. Love your families. I’ve never laughed so hard trying to get a bride in a dress. Starting with a bustled dress might not have been ideal, but the laughter was worth it. Emma earned her maid of honour badge that morning. Another special moment was Lucy’s mom sewing on her wedding “bling” for the dress (fast seamstress!!) and the first look with her dad before the ceremony.

Luke was quite misty eyed at the walk down the aisle along with several guests! This wedding has been 10 years in the making and 3 years in the planning (covid didn’t help!).

A fun detail was Lucy’s ruby shoes and bouquet…and her brother painted their cake topper to match. I just wish we had recreated the topper pose on the dock!!! The sun had set by the time I saw the cake. We had such a great day and can’t thank you both enough for being the amazing adventurous souls that you are…

All good love stories start somewhere; tell us how and when you met …

Luke and I (Lucy) met in 2011 in Karratha Western Australia we were both working as Engineers on a Construction Site there at the time.

Tell us about your lives together …

It will be 10 years together in December 2021. We have traveled to may a good dive site (Lord Howe, The Dampier Archipelago, Rowley Shawls, Mindarie Marine Park to name a few), done too many 4WD and camping trips together (around the Pilbara, The Gibb River Road, The South Coast of WA, Outback Queensland) . Adopted a rescue dog called Kellie a Black and Tan Kelpie Cross who pretty much travels everywhere with us including across Australia.

What does marriage mean to you?

Marriage to us is a continuation of our lives together and the ability to share many more adventures together for as long as we can as we navigate through life.

Make us laugh, make us cry: who proposed to who, and how?

Luke proposed to Lucy. Luke proposed, on a sand atoll at Rowley Shoals, 300km west of Broome in the Indian Ocean. It was sunset, we had just done 5 nights out of 7 on a live aboard dive boat tour for Lucy’s 30th birthday present and Luke surprised her to say the least. Luke snuck a ring onboard in a cardboard box of “fishing lures” knowing Lucy wouldn’t go looking in the box. Whilst walking on the sunset beach Luke asked Lucy to take a sunset photo like we always do while travelling, the sunset was spectacular. Then Luke struggled to get the ring box out of his pocket and started stressing! After fumbling for what seemed like an eternity, luckily Lucy took multiple photos! Luke dropped a knee and asked if she would spend the rest of her life alongside him with many more sunsets as great as the current one. Lucy paused in shock for what seemed like even more of an eternity before finally saying yes!

How and why did you choose your venues?

The venue was Branell Homestead Laidley QLD. We wanted a venue where we could host our guests, hold the ceremony and reception without having friends and family travel between places. Branell homestead has old school charm, lots of different spaces for photographs/ ceremony/ reception spaces. Plus, Kathy and her team are fantastic to deal with. It also meant people could fly into Brisbane to get to the venue too making it very accessible.

What was the inspiration behind your wedding style?

Stuck to simple and let the venue stand out. Picked roses and they were the signature piece for the day.

Did you incorporate any traditions or perhaps do something a little different?

Had an acknowledgement of country included in the ceremony, kept the ceremony very relaxed and made it our own thanks to our Celebrant Kate Totman (The Third Wheel Co)

Were there any standout suppliers?

I am just going to name them all as they were all amazing: Photography – Dallas Love Photography, Make-up – Teneal Hann Makeup Artist, Hair – Glam Hair by Tamara, Cake – Cake House by Katrina Allen, Celebrant – Kate Totman (Third Wheel Co Weddings), Venue – Branell Homestead.

Do you have any words of wisdom to offer other couples?

Small weddings are great and remember to take multiple moments as the bride and groom to just soak it all in as the day just goes so fast.

Funniest Moment Of The Day

Finding out the groom was wearing pineapple themed socks as we had only joked about it & forgetting to unbussel my dress prior to putting it on led to 30 mins of pure laughter and shenanigans.

Most Special Memory Of The Day

Honestly sitting back and watching everyone having a good time and laughing was very memorable.

Favourite Details From The Day

The lighting around the venue, the groom spent hours the day before stringing up additional lights to complement what was already in place and it looked magical on the night. The roses were great as the main decorations and everyone got to take some home for mothers day the next day.  The food was amazing and the sunset at the venue just rounded out the day so well.

Anything you are really glad you did ….

Keeping the wedding guest list small meant we could get around and have a good catch-up with everyone.

Did you (or will you) enjoy a honeymoon? If so, how and why did you choose your destination?

Originally we were meant to go to Fiji to scuba dive and Luke hadn’t been there before, however due to travel restrictions we changed the destination to the WhitSundays to stay in Queensland and decided we could use a challenge so we learnt to sail and took out a “Bare Boat Charter” with Whitsunday Escape and sailed/ motored around on a 40ft sail Catamaran around the WhitSunday Islands for 10 Nights.

Please share any other details…anything you’d like to say or share?

Would like to say a massive thank you to our Vendors for sticking with us through the 2020 to 2021 date challenge due to covid-19 and to all our friends and family thank you for celebrating with us in person or via a message.
